Student Wellness

Your well-being in learning is my priority. Curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking need well-cared-for mental space to grow.

One wellness day is built into the schedule. On this day, you are not expected to do coursework. If you'd prefer a different day, reach out in advance—no questions asked, no documentation required.

Attendance

Attendance is essential. Class meetings, the field trip, and the film screening are mandatory. If a conflict with religious or cultural observances arises, please let me know by the first Wednesday.

Excused Absences

Email me before class with supporting documentation (doctor's note, athletic schedule, etc.).

Artificial Intelligence

This class gives you the option to choose: to use or not to use AI, that is the question.

If you choose to use AI, submit a three-page reflective essay on AI use at the end of the block. No AI may be involved in writing this reflection.

What counts as AI usage?

Using any part of an AI-generated response in your submitted work: AI-generated sentences, edits, structural changes, bibliographies, or grammar/clarity corrections you incorporate.

What does not count?

Asking AI to summarize a reading and only reading that summary—without using its wording, ideas, or structure in your own work—is considered consuming AI content, similar to reading a scholarly article.

You will not be penalized for using AI. Work is evaluated solely on quality. Failure to attribute AI usage in good faith is plagiarism.

Participation & Community Building

Participate actively, frequently, and bravely. Everyone should speak at least once each session. Meaningful participation means interacting with peers and contributing to a class learning community.

Sharing your thoughts takes courage. Making a genuine point is always risky while saying a cliché is safe. In discussion as in writing, focus on expressing, not impressing. Ugly is okay. Confusing is okay. Silence is not.

Technology

Laptops are allowed for accessing readings. When actively listening, fold or half-fold your screen. Consider paper or a tablet for notes. No messaging or texting during class.

Honor Code

Using another person's ideas without proper acknowledgment constitutes plagiarism. All papers, including group work, must be your own. Refer to the MLA Handbook on plagiarism and the Pathfinder for CC's policies.

Accessibility

I am committed to meeting the needs of a diverse student body. If you anticipate or experience disability-related barriers, please discuss your concerns with me. Connect with Accessibility Resources for accommodations support.
